MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - At the Township Board meeting held on Tuesday, December 1st, the continuation of the mobile food unit ordinance was discussed further among the Board.
The Board last discussed these food units at the October 20th meeting and requested that several changes be made to the draft ordinance.
Appropriate changes were made however, the only item that struck any kind of concern was the hours of operation for these mobile businesses.
"This is a business that's outside and the customers are outside and there's open windows so that the people working inside of the mobile food unit are talking to the people that are standing outside in the parking lots," Treasurer Julie Brixie stated.
Attention was brought forward regarding the possible nuisance of these mobile units for residents living near the specific parking areas.
"As a person that lives pretty close to some parking lots I can attest to one of the major annoyances with that in conflicts is that in the evening if you're trying to go to sleep, you hear people outside and so since they aren't inside...that is something that I'm worried about," mentioned Brixie.
She recommended changing the hours from 6 a.m. until midnight, to 6 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. to help reduce the potential disruption for residents.
"I think that's a reasonable modification and I can support 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.," Township Clerk Brett Dreyfus stated.
Unfortunately, other Board members had a different opinion.
"I'm not opposed one way or the other to this time thing but I'm trying to think of the logic here," Trustee Milton Scales stated.
He suggested to keep the ordinance how it is already written, and if there is a problem with a specific area they can always come back to make adjustments.
"I think 11:00 (p.m.) would be great but I'm always up for compromising," Trustee Ron Styka proposed.
The Board reached a consensus and agreed on adjusting the time to 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. moving this item to action for the December 8th meeting.
