LANSING - Governor Snyder has proclaimed April 12th-18th as Severe Weather Awareness Week.

The Michigan Committee for Severe Weather Awareness (MCSWA) along with the Michigan State Police are encouraging residents to properly prepare before severe weather strikes this spring and summer season.

“Severe Weather Awareness Week is the time of year to learn what to do before, during and after severe weather hazards,” stated Capt. Chris A. Kelenske, Deputy State Director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security and commander of the MSP/EMHSD. “That includes flooding, thunderstorms and tornadoes. By taking the initiative and learning your hazards, you and your family will be better prepared when an emergency or disaster happens.”

Fast-changing weather conditions are something to keep an eye out for as we head into spring. Several precautionary measures can be taken to help minimize damage and ensure safety.

Preparing an emergency plan, contact list and supply kit can help reduce your chances of devastation if a major disaster such as a flood were to occur.

There will also be a statewide tornado drill on April 16th at 2pm. Businesses, schools, and households are encouraged to partake in this emergency awareness procedure.

A special ceremony will also be held at the State Capitol on April 14th at 10am to recognize Severe Weather Awareness Week and honor the winners of this year’s Severe Weather Awareness Poster Contest.More than 300 poster entries were received from fourth and fifth graders statewide.

And lastly on April 15th Ingham County is hosting a PrepareAthon at Lansing City Hall from 11:30a.m.-1:30p.m. Attendees will receive information about severe weather and have the opportunity to win $1,000 in prizes from Target.
