MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Students of the 8th grade science class at Howell Middle School were brought a little bit closer to nature by raising fertilized salmon eggs over the winter in order to release them into the Red Cedar River at Ferguson Park in Meridian Township.

"There's one fish for every three people, and you go in the water as a group and you just kind of release them. It was a really fun experience," said Nicholas Goodwin, 8th grade student at Howell Middle School.

There were stations set up around the park so the students could learn how to properly test the water, cast a fishing line and learn about the ecology of the Great Lakes.

This event is called "Salmon in the Classroom", and it was put on by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The program was set in place to really teach the students about the life cycle of a fish.

After three years of this program, students still get excited to have this experience.
