UPDATE:
LANSING - School funding has been a big issue for schools for the past several years. And some new changes will be affecting it again. Recently the legislature changed the way that schools are funded. Schools get a certain amount for each student. The count for those students is done twice every school year. Jan Ellis, the spokesperson for the Department of Education said, "This year what happened is that the legislature changed the calculations. So it went from bring 75% in the fall to 90%. And that is to really reflect more accurately the number of students that are there in the fall. And fall is the biggest count."
This calculation was formally 75% in the fall and 25% in the spring. Those two numbers are blended together and averaged to get each year's student count. According to Ellis, this will be more beneficial to schools with increasing numbers. For schools that have a fairly steady enrollment, this wont effect them much.
