Protect Your Furry Friends This Winter

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - With a winter weather advisory issued for Ingham County, freezing temperatures, a few inches of snow on the ground and more snow on the way, animal safety is something to keep in mind.

Pet owners can keep their furry friends warm and safe this winter by following Ingham County Animal Control and Shelter’s list of tips.

Keep animals indoors if possible. If they are outdoor animals, ensure they have proper coverage with an insulated shelter and straw bedding; blankets and shredded paper will freeze. The shelter’s door needs to face south and be sized to house the animal perfectly. Attach plastic or fabric to the door to shield the animal from the wind. The Ingham County Animal Control and Shelter in Mason and the Outreach Center offers straw bedding for free to Ingham County residents.

Outdoor animals are susceptible to dehydration and hypothermia, especially if they eat snow. They need access to water in a heated water bowl at all times.

Special precautions need to be taken with young animals, old animals and animals with medical conditions.

Before driving your car, check for outdoor cats who often find shelter in the compartments of the engine. Keep a close eye on your pets and make sure they aren’t exposed to chemicals used in car antifreeze and chemicals used in the salt that melts snow and ice.

An unfortunate and common trend during cold weather is seeing animals outdoors who have been neglected. If you see something, say something by contacting Ingham County Animal Control and Shelter at (517) 676-8370 or the Animal Cruelty Hotline at (517) 676-8376.

Ingham County Animal Control and Shelter was closed today due to the weather. It will reopen to the public tomorrow. Staff is on duty taking care of the animals.
