MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Plans to renovate business in Downtown Okemos with a new mixed-use building has been delayed.
Douglas J Salon and Spa is looking to build a 25,000-square foot commercial and retail center on Okemos and Hamilton Roads. The multi-million dollar project would also include turning their current building near the same intersection into company offices.
"It could be the transformative project that really sets the tone in Downtown Okemos as far as the other four corners being developed," said Associate Planner of Meridian Township, Peter Menser.
However, low hanging power lines in the area are a concern with building plans drawn for a three story building. The building would go up where local businesses have closed up shop including the Travelers Club, Triple Goddess Bookstore, and White Brothers Music.
”We've been in discussions with Consumers Energy on what the best way to alleviate the issue with the power lines. You could raise them up higher, you could re-route the lines around the block or one of the main options and a very favorable option would be to bury them in an underground vault," said Menser.
The cost to bury the power lines could cost around $3 million, but it's unsure who would pay the bill.
"We're not at a standstill necessarily but kind of a who's going to pay for what, how much is the Township able to contribute if anything,” said Menser.
A representative for Douglas J Salon and Spa was unavailable for an interview, but in a statement they said:
"Obviously the Douglas J Salon and Spa family is anxious to get things moving but these types of things take time and they want to make sure all people are on board to make this a success."
Consumers Energy declined comment until after they have rescheduled a meeting with Township staff and Douglas J Salon and Spa representatives to discuss where they will go from here.
