EAST LANSING - President Barack Obama visited Michigan State University this last Friday in order to see the advancements the University is making in agriculture as well as to sign the 2014 Farm Bill into law.
After joking that he was also in Michigan to do some scouting for his brackets, the president stated one of the real reasons he came to Michigan to sign the Farm Bill,
"...there are few places in the country that better symbolize what we've been through these last [five] years" going on to say how the Michigan automobile industry has been the "heartbeat" of the state's economy as well as the "heart" of the nation's manufacturing. He noted how the state and the nation came together to save the auto industry in Michigan and the positive outcome of those efforts. The president went on to explain how the Farm Bill would accommodate and aid both citizens and farmers alike saying,
"...despite it's name, the Farm Bill is not just about helping farmers, Secretary Vilsack calls it a jobs bill, an innovation bill, an infrastructure bill, a research bill, a conservation bill, it's like a Swiss Army knife...it multi-tasks".
The president says the bill "...helps rural communities grow, it gives farmers some certainty, it put's in place certain reforms". It's intent is also to help ensure that American children don't go unfed. President Obama said that the Farm Bill is giving smaller producers the ability to sell their products without the middle men traditionally present. In the end, the president concludes that the Farm Bill will ultimately save American's money.
As the American people continue to work for a better future, consistent with what the Farm Bill implements, it has been made clear that President Obama will be diligently working alongside the American people.
"...as I said at the State of the Union, America does not stand still, and neither will I".
