Okemos Students Receive New Learning Devices

Okemos Students Receive New Learning
Devices

OKEMOS - Thanks to the 2013 Technology/Transportation/Security Bond, 667 Kinawa Middle School students recently put down their pencils in exchange for a new Dell Venue 11 device. In addition, students also received a charger, stylus and carrying case.

According to Kinawa Middle School Principal John Hood, the new technology not only aims to develop students into modern, 21st century learners, but to also engage student learning and not just substitute traditional pencil and paper.

Kinawa Middle School was the last to receive their learning devices, one year after Okemos High School and Chippewa Middle School.

"We wanted to make sure the devices were appropriate for their use," said Principal Hood. "One thing we did that was very different was just a much more deliberate enhancement of internet safety and responsibility online with the kids."

Each personal learning device can be turned into a tablet or laptop and features keyboards that run on Windows with geo-tracking, Internet filtering, virus protection and a 3-year warranty. Students are able to take these devices home with them.

But the students aren't the only ones who are learning to adjust as teachers are finding new ways to interact with their students in and out of the classroom.

"(Teachers) have to learn how to manage their classrooms differently, learn how to present lessons differently. Students are using a lot of Google Classroom, Google Drive to interact with teachers and get instantaneous feedback online," explained Principal Hood.

All students, as well as parents, received a special training for proper use and school expectations. Any new student will receive the exact same training.
