OKEMOS - The Hope Borbas Okemos Branch Library has reopened after a three month-long renovation project. Located on the corner of Okemos Road and Science Parkway, the library underwent an interior make-over that included new paint, new furniture, updated wiring, and an increased number of outlets to allow more computer usage throughout the facility.
The condition of the Okemos Library was a topic of concern among many library patrons and workers. Melissa Gaus, Head of Circulation, mentioned that the need for renovation was obvious, especially since the Okemos Branch is one of the busiest in its library cooperative. "We have a lot of library users come in with laptops and we had nowhere for them to plug in. We literally had people fighting over outlets."
After a plan was approved by the Township Board, updating the library became a possibility. The library raised around $200,000 to update the building in addition to receiving funds from Meridian Township and Capital Area District Libraries.
Now, after many changes, including a new quiet room, expanding patron areas, upgrading the restrooms, and installing new carpet, the library is back and better than ever.
"It looks much bigger and brighter," says Gaus. She was not the only one to comment on the size of the library. On its first day open, many patrons walked through the library doors and immediately noticed the changes. "It was pretty lively in here, so it's really great to see the community be excited about our opening," says Gaus.
Head Librarian, Betsy Hull, mentioned in a blog for Capital Area District Libraries that the exterior of the building will be painted in the Spring. She adds that the library "will also install new furniture in the children’s area."
The January 2nd opening was a "soft opening" according to Hull, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for Saturday, January 25th from 1-4 p.m. Tours and refreshments will be provided.
