MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP, MICHIGAN - Meridian Township residents have widespread access to food and other vital items through the operation of Micro Food Pantries in Meridian Township. Due to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Township officials temporarily approved an emergency regulation to allow these micro pantries to hold nonperishable goods for those in need in the community.
The Haslett and Okemos branches of Capital Area District Libraries (CADL) are home to two out of the three donated pantries from the Meridian Company, right outside, in their parking lots. Two other approved locations in the Township to install a micro food pantry are Faith Lutheran Church and Ideal Mortgage.
“Sponsoring a pantry and doing something, so community focused is sort of what the library is all about,” said Tom Moore, Haslett Branch Head Librarian of CADL.
Meridian Township encourages other organizations and businesses to become sponsors of a Micro Food Pantry and ensure that the pantries remain stocked for people in need. Sponsors are responsible for the maintenance, operation and final removal of the Micro Food Pantry. Those interested in becoming a Micro Food Pantry sponsor can contact the Township Planning Division at 517.853.4560 for an application.
