MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Due to the passing of the parks' millage in Meridian Township in 2014, Towner Road Park is expanding.
The Meridian Township Parks & Recreation Department wanted to purchase the property to expand the park, but when the recession hit, they weren't able to afford it.
Now that the millage has been passed, the funds are being used to buy the property, in hopes of expanding parking at the location.
The Township Board voted to sell the land to the Parks & Recreation Department at a recent meeting.
"And now the park has the funds available to purchase this land, which they originally had wanted but couldn't afford to purchase the whole thing," said Treasurer Julie Brixie.
The Towner Road property was in the process of being bought by an individual, but those plans fell through also due to financial issues from the recession.
In order to buy the land, $75,000 was transferred from the park millage fund to the general fund.
