MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Dozens of residents between the ages of five and 16 attended the Meridian Fishing Derby on Saturday, June 8. The derby, held at central park pond, takes place the first weekend after local schools begin summer vacation. Parks and Recreation Specialist, Greg Grothous said valuable skills can be learned from the experience.
"Well yeah, I mean, it's a life long, ya know, hobby. I mean, you can fish your whole life, and once you learn and once you understand it you can take your grand kids fishing some day."
The event was held in conjunction with the Michigan DNR free fishing weekend. The free week of fishing is meant to encourage Michigan residents to buy a fishing license. Prizes are awarded to the biggest fish, second biggest fish, and smallest fish.
