EAST LANSING - The Wisconsin Badgers traveled to East Lansing on September 12 for the first game of Big Ten play for the Spartans.
Both teams entered the game 6-0 in non-conference play.
The first minutes of the game were very evenly matched but, after a few missed opportunities by the Spartans, Wisconsin was first to strike in the 20th minute of play. Making the score 1-0 in Wisconsin's favor at the half.
The Spartans had to make some adjustments to their line up as starting mid-fielder Megan Marsack went down with an injury at the end of the first half.
"Megs a great player especially for our attack," Head coach Tom Saxton said. "She’ll be missed. Hopefully it wont be for too long."
Despite the loss of a key midfielder the Spartans were able to tie the game in the 58th minute with a goal from freshman Jamie Cheslik.
No more goals were scored in regulation causing the Spartans to play extra minutes for their second game in a row.
Both teams started overtime with very high intensity but it was Wisconsin who capitalized first with a goal off a corner kick giving them the 2-1 victory.
"I think their great ball possession wore us down a little bit," Saxton said. "Certainly disappointed with the way things ended but in terms of what we can do and our performance we have to build on it and feel good about the level we can compete at and just regroup for Sunday."
Spartan players Mary Kathryn Fiebernitz and Jamie Cheslik believe that even with the loss the Spartans have a bright future.
"This is a great team to start off with in the Big Ten," Fiebernitz said. "They're ranked number 9 I believe and we’re only going to go up from here were going to learn from it. We came away from this game with a lot of positives so I think we can only go up."
The Spartans also took on the Minnesota Golden Gophers yesterday and again fell 1-0 in overtime. The Spartans are now 6-2 over all and 0-2 in The Big Ten. The girls will be back in action on Sept. 19 against Rutgers.
