UPDATE:
EAST LANSING - The Office of Admissions has received over 30,000 applications for the upcoming semester. There is a noticeable increase in the number of out of state applicants as well as international student. Typically, about 60 percent of applicants are from within the state, but in the past few years this number has slightly declined, correlating with the decrease in the number of high school graduates.
If MSU is to keep its admission process selective, this lack of in state applications creates a gap in new students. For this reason, it makes sense to extend the reach of the university beyond the state of Michigan.
Creating a broader mix of students necessitates the university analyzing the needs of incoming students more closely. Transcripts from international students can look quite different from domestic ones, and give a different perspective on learning styles of these students.
