LANSING - The Michigan High School Athletic Association is putting in new methods of practice to limit injuries among football players.
During the first week of practice of the season, only helmets are allowed the first two days, only shoulder pads may be added on the third and fourth days, and full pads may not be worn until the fifth day of team practice.
"It won’t affect us at all," said Okemos Head Coach Jack Wallace.
"The collision this year allows you two collision practices, and Tuesday and Wednesday has always been our collision days. Mondays and Thursdays have been our off days, in terms of collision. There is a three hour practice limit once you are through with your preseason. Once again, we are always about two and a half to two and 45," said Wallace.
Before the first regular season game schools may not schedule more than one collision practice in a day. The MHSAA is giving each head coach a safety blitz pamphlet, which promotes these new safety measures and more.
