UPDATE:
HASLETT, MI - For Lansing Sailing Club member Patrick Dolan, sailing is a sport full of challenges.
"There's a lot of tactical and strategic issues, as well as athletic issues involved in racing a sailboat that make it very interesting," said Dolan. "You have the natural elements, the wind and the waves, which present a lot of different challenges depending on the conditions."
Racing a sailboat, or sailing, is a sport for people of all ages and skill sets, according to Doug Carlson, Laser Fleet Captain of the Lansing Sailing Club, and involves teamwork just like any other sport.
"We sail boats where you have a crew and I enjoy the teamwork element of it," said Dolan. "The ability to work together and to make decisions together quickly is really exciting for me."
People may think the thrill of water sports comes from speed boats, jet skis, and going fast, but Carlson believes racing sailboats creates it's own kind of thrill.
"Sailing, the experience is going there, or doing it, or being a part of the day out sailing," said Carlson. "I think more power boats as, you go to point A to point B."
On August 18th the Lansing Sailing Club will be hosting a district event for laser racing that will bring sailors from all over the state as well as sailors from Canada, Ohio, and Illinois.
