MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - If you plan on making a splash at the beach this summer, you should be aware of some safety tips for swimmers at Lake Lansing.
Anybody at the beach under the age of thirteen needs to have a parent or guardian with them if they want to take a dip. Lake Lansing has life jackets for any swimmer who wants the extra support. Water wings, water noodles and floating mattresses are not allowed on the beach because they discourage careful swimming. The biggest key to safe swimming is to not get too confident.
"It only takes seconds before you lose control and you're in water over your head or you lose control and maybe you have a cramp. Maybe you're a high school swimmer. You get a cramp in the water and next thing you know you cannot swim," said Lake Lansing Park Manager Pat Witte.
Frisbees and balls are also not allowed to be tossed on beaches. A lifeguard will be present whenever they the beach is open.
