• People gathered at the Lansing Capitol building to fight for women's reproductive rights.

LANSING, MICH. - On Oct. 4, the United States Supreme Court will reconvene and hear a case that has the potential to overturn Roe v. Wade.

If this happens, state and county legislatures could create laws that make abortion illegal. That is why people gathered at the Lansing Capitol building on Oct. 2 to let lawmakers hear their voices.

The speakers were also worried about one law from Hillsdale, Michigan.

"We actually have a law from 1931 in the state of Michigan that makes performing an abortion a felony and it's only inactive right now because of Roe v. Wade," Chelsea Julian, one of the citizen community organizers said. "So if that gets overturned, it could be enforced."

The March for Abortion Justice rally began at 12:30 pm in front of the Capitol building. The crowd heard from many speakers including Sen. Debbie Stabenow, State Representative Sarah Anthony and more.

After the speakers, the crowd took to Michigan Avenue to march. The crowd began yelling 'My body, my choice' and other chants as they held up their signs.

Kim Houvener said this was the first rally she's ever attended and she wished she had done this before.

"It's a new experience for me and I'm loving it," the mother of four said.

The rally was held by MI Body MI Choice and had 14 sponsors at the event with tables to give the crowd more information. Some of these sponsors were voting registration groups, Fems for Dems, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan and more.

Also at the event was the Meta Peace Team, which were all volunteers who helped maintain the peace at the event.

Anti-abortion supporters were across the street, however the event remained peaceful and both sides were able to express their beliefs during the march.
