MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Leading up to the August 2nd elections, candidates for all offices and their campaign teams worked hard at promoting them.
From yard signs and pamphlets to commercials, candidates utilized many different mediums in an effort to increase their votes and advertise themselves.
Lawn signs seemed to be the most popular form of advertisement for candidates, but perhaps not the most effective.
“Television advertisements seem to be the most effective because people are watching t.v on their tablets, computers, and phones,” said Susan Demas, writer and editor of Inside Michigan Politics.
Sudhir Kattar, an Okemos resident, believes that lawn signs can actually be a very reliable way for candidates to promote themselves.
“In order to put their signs in people’s grass they have to have the homeowners’ permission,” said Kattar. “So by giving them permission the homeowners’ are taking some responsibility.”
According to Demas, lawn signs are popular because they can make a candidate’s name recognizable, but don’t allow a voter to gain a sense of trust for candidates the same way that images and videos can.
Regardless of the medium that candidates used, voters were swayed at least in part by these advertisements and took their decisions to the polls on election day.
