MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Summertime is here, which means that we are going to get hit with our typical Michigan humidity.
"During the summer months, you want to make sure you're not only taking care of yourself, but checking on others as well," says Tavis Millerov Meridian Township Fire Inspector.
Take extra care if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening when the temperature drops. Be sure to know the signs and symptoms of heat stroke and heat exhaustion.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration suggests scheduling frequent breaks in shaded or air conditioned areas.
With temperatures in the state rising above 90°F again this week and through the weekend, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is reminding all residents to stay safe and cool to beat the heat.
“It’s important that all residents take the hot weather into consideration in their daily activities. Stay hydrated and out of the sun as much possible to avoid serious health complications,” stated Nick Lyon, Director of MDHHS.
There are plenty of ways to stay cool this summer while also cutting back on energy usage. The U.S. Department of Energy has plenty of tips on how to beat the heat and cut back on energy uses this summer. Some are as simple as using a fan or getting an Energy-star approved air conditioner.
As temperatures are nearing 90 degrees in the upcoming days, Consumer's Energy wants to help you prepare with a variety of tools and tips that can help you manage your business' energy use. 1) Don't cool unused areas. Close doors and vents to reduce energy use. 2) Make sure your air conditioning unit is installed in a shady area. 3) Keep furniture from blocking registers and vents.
There are cooling areas all around the Lansing area that you can also go to in order to avoid the blazing heat of the summer months.
The Meridian Senior Center, Meridian Mall and large retail stores such as Meijer are just a few cooling centers in Meridian Township.
