HASLETT - A woman woke up to her house completely on fire. Just shortly after midnight on Sunday, January 19th, the Meridian Township Fire Department received a call about a home that was on fire in Haslett on Kasey Lane.
The woman, Cami Rapon, escaped the fire with her 7-month old German Shepard service dog by climbing out her window from the second story onto a first story roof top. Neighbor John Trebilcock said she tossed the dog to a neighbor below before jumping herself.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital and her condition remains unknown.
What caused the fire and if she had working smoke detectors is still under investigation.
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), you should check all smoke alarms in your home once a month. The NFPA also goes on to say that smoke alarm batteries should be replaced at least once a year.
Meridian Township's EMS and Training Chief, Bill Priese, said that as far as they know the damage to the home goes all the way down to the basement and could be a total loss.
Priese recommends homeowners create an escape plan and a log of belongings to help prepare for an unfortunate incident of a house fire.
