HASLETT, MI - Haslett (No. 4 seed) Girl's Varsity Soccer took on Mason (No. 5 seed) in a CAAC Gold Cup match-up. The Vikings got the first half rolling scoring two goals within the first twenty minutes. “The seniors came out and were just on fire they came out so hard,” says Haslett Head Coach Dave Littleton.
Rightfully so, it was senior night last week which pumped the team up for this match-up. With just over three minutes to go in the first period Haslett Senior Megan Mowid scores another goal to bring the Vikings lead up 3-0. Coach Littleton delivered this message at the half: “It was the best half we’ve ever played. It can change quickly this next half, we need to keep the momentum going.”
The first half was dominated by the Vikings offensive effort but Mason Goalie dove to save a couple deep shots to keep the lead from climbing. Littleton sends Haslett back on the field for the second half saying, “We need to go out there with a hard five. We need to win everything, let’s take it tens minutes at a time and win every ten minutes.”
Mason controlled possession of the ball for the majority of the second half causing Haslett to bring their A-Game on defense. The Vikings scored for the fourth time in the last ten minutes bringing the score 4-0.
Mason wasn’t going to let the Vikings take this one that easy, with just under forty seconds to go a kick to the top of the net hits the top of the post and doesn’t go in but they get a quick second change and send it in to get on the board. Final 4-1.
Haslett Senior Charley Campbell on Mason’s Goal: “We were just exhausted, it hit the post and we just stood there. They got a great goal and they deserved that goal.”
