UPDATE:
LANSING - The United States Judiciary Committee recently approved a bill that would mandate background checks for gun purchases. The next stop for the bill is the Senate floor.
State Representative Sam Singh mentioned that the bill has support from both Democrats and Republicans. He said the this kind of bipartisan bill is "a good first step" in preventing felons and mentally ill persons from owning firearms.
At a recent gun-rights rally outside of the Capitol building in Lansing, Kyle Fox spoke about the issue of background checks as a means to prevent gun violence. Fox said that he owns six firearms himself and has "had a background check done on [him] every time." He mentioned that it is a good idea but suggested that "some fish will slip through the net."
The gun control debate is expected to continue in the upcoming months.
