Grow, Cook, Learn: Cooking

UPDATE: EAST LANSING - This summer has been a summer all about food for 10-year-old, Catie Jacobs.

"I love the program, it's just so fun and I came all three weeks that they did this the whole summer" said Catie.

So, what was it that kept her coming back?

"I really love the cooking. It's my favorite thing to do besides drawing and painting and stuff, my hobbies. But it's a lot of fun", said Catie.

Because Catie enjoyed camp so much and decided to attend more than one session, it made the camp's owner, Stephanie, think of more creative things to cook.

"I had to make sure that I had a different thing to cook every day for those three weeks. So, that pushed me to keep coming up with some different items to cook. Just a variety. Also, what's ripe or ready to harvest in the garden. Like we had swiss chard or zucchini, things like that. What we have in the garden and we're able to use", said Stephanie.

Each of those recipes that the kids use to cook, are written down in their journals that they made on the first day of camp.

Catie said, "It's kind of good, it's like a recipe book. So, it's like, almost everything that I've made in the past few weeks, I've made at home."

"It's based on the food pyramid, My Pyramid. I try to have a bit of variety so that I can talk to them about just different nutrition topics, you know, vegetables or fiber, whole grain, lean meats and a variety of vegetables", said Stephanie.

At the end of the cooking session, everyone heads to the garden to enjoy what they have cooked up.

On the next Meridian Magazine, we will talk about what these kids learned and what creative activities Stephanie has planned for the kids.
