Flexible Learning Spaces Sparking New
Ideas

OKEMOS - Flexible Learning Spaces is a new thing for Okemos English Teacher Dawn Reed.

She said that last spring she applied for a grant with the Okemos Education Foundation and they granted her $1,000.

"With the grant money, I was able to buy two tall tables and four stools for the tables. It works well for my English Language Arts class," said Reed.

She also said that over half of the students in her class prefer the tall tables.

Reed has her classroom set up for the students to have options. Some desk are individual desks, while others are round tables.

One Okemos High School student said that he thinks the flexible learning spaces are a good idea and every classroom should have them.

He also said some students might get tired of one stance, so if they were able to sit differently, it might spark new ideas, and learning wouldn't be so mundane.

The Okemos Education Foundation awarded 35 classroom grants in the 2014-2015 school year, totaling almost $30,000.
