MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Pull on those long johns and get ready for the annual Family Winter Sports Weekend January 24th-26th!
"Last year approximately 600 attended the Winter Wonderland event. It was really cool to see so many people enjoying a Michigan winter in the great outdoors! No matter what the weather is, our sled drivers, ice sculptor and all the other volunteers will be here to show the visitors a good time. Best of all, this year there will be puppies!" commented Kit Rich, Senior Park Naturalist/Nature Center Coordinator.
The weekend activities kick off at the MSU Demmer Center on Friday for Target Practice from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. All types of target shooting are offered at a reduced rate.
Saturday will be a bustling day starting with “Winter Wonderland” at Harris Nature Center where you can participate in snowshoeing, skiing, sled dog demonstrations, ice sculptures, a silent auction and games. Join the Lansing Curling Club later that day at the Central Park South Pond for an introduction to the Scottish sport known as “Chess on Ice.” When the sun goes down, head over to North Meridian Road Park Sledding Hill for “Family Moonlight Sledding”. Slide down the lit hill, enjoy hot chocolate, and keep warm by the campfire.
Pin on your race bib number on Sunday morning for the 7th Annual Polar Bear 5K Run/Walk. The race is open to all ages and abilities. Participants registering before January 17 will receive a special race shirt. Awards will be handed out to the top three finishers in 14 divisions. Later in the day head indoors for free family bowling at City Limits East Lansing and then round out the afternoon with target practice again at Demmer Center. Take a dip in the MAC’s pool that evening to relax after a busy weekend from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
