UPDATE:
MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - When it's time for Matt Stehouwer to fill up, he usually isn't in search of a gas station like the rest of us.
Which is probably because he doesn't drive a car like the rest of us either.
Stehouwer has owned his hybrid electric Chevy Volt for nearly two years and he usually doesn't need anything more than a electric charging station when it's time to fill up.
ChargePoint, a company based in California makes electric charging stations like the one recently installed at Studio C Cinemas in Meridian Township. Their station is the first one in the area installed for public use.
"I think it's great, obviously we'll come to this movie theater over another movie theatre just because of the fact that it has a charging station," Stehouwer said.
"This is the future of gas stations."
ChargePoint just might be the first of many more businesses in the township do install such stations for public use. At least that's the hope of LeRoy Harvey, the township's recycling coordinator.
"Thousands of companies around the United States are installing these charging stations so there's definitely a realization that this is coming," Harvey said. "It's not necessarily the answer but it's something that progressive companies probably consider when planning for the future."
