UPDATE:
LANSING - The Meridian Township Police Department can not say whether or not recent county and state law changes would have saved the life of Okemos High School senior Adam Nevells had they been in affect.
So on what level have those changes affected Meridian Township?
After the death of Nevells residence in Ingham county met with both Meridian Township police department as well as the Ingham County Road Commission in order to get the speed limit on Hulett Rd and Jolly, right in front of Okemos High School changed.
Since the advancement of cell phones have had motorist reading text messages and surfing the web. Law makers put into affect a ban on texting while driving.
Lt. Frenger from Meridian Township Police Department said, "It is extremely difficult to determine whether a motorist was texting or dialing to make a phone call."
As a result Meridian Township Police Department has only written eleven citations since the law went into affect in July of 2010
While it is still unclear whether the new texting and driving law will make driving safer for motorist. It is clear that the changes in the speed limit in front of Okemos High School is favored by Okemos residents.
