UPDATE:
LANSING, MI - For the region of Southern Michigan, where Meridian Township is located, hunting conditions were considered fair on opening day of the 2011 firearm deer season. Hunting activity varied somewhat around the region, but appeared the same or lower than last year.
Out of the seven deer management properties in Meridian Township, the Davis Foster Land Preserve is still the only property open for firearms, but during firearm season the township made an exception for the other six properties.
"We also had bow hunting continuing through firearm season in the rest of the properties because you are able to hunt with a bow during firearm season as long as you have the appropriate license," said Jane Greenway, Parks & Land Management Coordinator for Meridian Township. "And that was good because we did get a few more deer that way."
Meridian Township has now harvested 14 deer in the managed hunt, and on November 14th, expanded the hunting hours. Selected hunters are now allowed to hunt Monday through Saturday, all day, every day, except on Sundays, in hopes to increase the number of deer harvested.
The firearm deer season ended November 30th, and bow hunting season resumed on December 1st and will continue through all of December.
