UPDATE: EAST LANSING - MSU could lose $18.3 million in state funding after it exceeded the state’s 7.1 percent limitation on tuition rate increases for the following school year.
Just last month, the tuition for MSU jumps 6.9 percent. Which is just under the 7.1 percent state cap to get the 18.3 millions state funding. For an undergraduate student taking 15 credits per semester, tuition would jump from $11,670 to $12,769.
The House Fiscal Agency, a nonpartisan government agency, it released a report that actually MSU raised tuition by 9.4 percent. However, MSU officials say that number is artificially high, because it doesn't take into account federal stimulus money the university gave back to students.
MSU has 5056 international students, this question may be worse, as the tuition is twice as in state student.
The university is now waiting on the state's budget director, John Nixon, to decide whether it will get the tuition incentive grant or not.
