First and foremost make sure that all of the venting for the home heating unit is clear and operating correctly. Also, make sure that there are no leaks that could allow dangerous fumes into your home. If you're not sure then call a qualified contractor.

The air filters should be checked as well.

Next check the insulation. In the attic there should be at least R20. And while you're there, make sure that its dry and that no animals have gotten in.

Make sure that the door seal is in place and that the windows are secure from leaks.
