MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Flashing lights, inappropriate use of signage, and front lawns that aren't properly maintained are all a part of ordinances the Meridian Township code enforcement officer, Steve McGuire, makes sure are up to code.

"Code enforcement, we just go around and enforce the township ordinances," said Steve McGuire, Code Enforcement Officer for Meridian Township. "There's several different ordinances, anywhere from tall grass, to unlicensed or inoperable vehicles, to not maintaining your house and accessory structures."

Neighbors and residents concerned with people in their neighborhood violating township ordinances can call or email in their concerns.

"If in fact there is a violation, we send out a letter," said McGuire. "Depending on the type of violation, they get anywhere from 3-30 days. After that time we'll go back out and check on it. They can be cited civil infractions, citations, or appearance tickets, where they go in front of a district court judge to make them comply."

But McGuire prefers to work with residents to the best of his ability.

"I like giving people a little extra time, I know life gets in the way and people can't always comply with the ordinances during the time we give them," said McGuire. "I just try to work with people and make sure they comply with the ordinances."

"We really haven't had much of any experience. Everybody seems to keep up with their yard around here and support each other," said resident Leah Smith.
