UPDATE:
MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The former AMC theater is becoming a Celebration Cinema and will be open before Thanksgiving.
The renovated building is located on Central Park Drive in Okemos. It will be a high-end movie theater and not a traditional one. Movie goers will not only get a movie, but will have the option to order prepared food and drinks.
"They do have a liquor license so they will be serving alcohol, which may be a bigger draw for those interested," said Meridian Township Director of Community Planning and Development Mark Kieselbach. "It's something new that we don't have around here and I'm sure that it is going to be popular."
The food and alcoholic drinks are only going to be available in certain areas of the cinema depending on the type of movie and its rating.
Celebration Marketing Vice President Steve VanWagoner said they will still serve popcorn for movies, but they want people to also come in for dinner.
The theater will have six screens with stadium seating including reclining chairs in each auditorium. Each seat will also have an attached table to make it easier to enjoy meals on. Tickets are expected to be priced higher than an average theater.
With the cinema being so close to Meridian Mall and with the whole new movie experience that it provides, it is said to increase business in the area.
