LANSING - Gov. Gretchen Whitmer gave her third State of the State address Wednesday, January 27th from her office rather than the legislative chambers due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Whitmer addressed the COVID-19 pandemic as well as accomplishments and priorities for 2021.

“Throughout this crisis, the people of Michigan have harnessed the empathy and courage that makes us who we are as Michiganders,” Whitmer said. “The vast majority of you did your part, in the midst of the worst public health crisis inn out lifetimes the world saw just how tough Michiganders are."

She said that the state of the state is resilient.

Whitmer and the legislature have been at odds over the state's COVID-19 response and relief. However, there are some things both sides worked together on such as the Michigan Reconnect Program, a post secondary job training program, as well as clean state legislation which made Michigan’s criminal justice system fairer.

Whitmer also highlighted legislation that ended surprise billing. She also highlighted a prescription drug task force to recommend ways to lower drug prices. She called for bi-partisan cooperation on today’s issues.

“Let’s tap into that same energy and end the pandemic, revitalize our economy and get our kids back in school,” Whitmer said. “Let’s make good use of this non-election year, after all we’re Michiganders first.”

Whitmer also called for Republicans to work toward unity.

“I invite the legislature to partner with me, the health of our people, the education of our kids and the resurgence of our economy,” Whitmer said.

Whitmer also announced the fixing damn road ahead tour where she will go around the state and talk to people regardless of political party on what brings us together and to try and find common ground.
