• Construction taking place at "The Square"

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - A fund request for brownfield cleanup for "The Square" was discussed during the Township Board meeting on May 17.

Previously, the developer of "The Square" was requesting $2,835,000 for their brownfield cleanup efforts. After being denied, they returned with a new request for $2,068,500, of which the projected costs will not exceed $1,970,000.

Ernest Schafer, representative for "The Square", was present at the meeting to answer the board members' questions. Several members of the board had concerns involving the cost of the brownfield cleanup.

Trustee John Veenstra felt that the cost was far too high, while Trustee Milton Scales expressed concern with the effect the ever-decreasing amount of the request may have on the cleanup once it gets under way.

"The Square" Brownfield Request will be an action item at the next Township Board meeting.
