INGHAM COUNTY - The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for several counties across the state including Ingham county for today, Tuesday, September 3.

Thunderstorms are expected today, with the highest chance occurring between 2:00 and 10:00 p.m. The potential for severe weather exists with damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes all being possible threats. The thunderstorm will be rapidly moving off to the east at 40 to 50 miles per hour.

Winds gusts as high as 60 miles per hour are possible with the storms and Consumers Energy is monitoring the storms that could cause potential power outages.

Consumers is also reminding residents of important safety tips before, during and after a severe storm:

- Prepare an emergency kit with water, food, blankets, flashlights and batteries.
- Make sure your phone is charged.
- Stay off the roads during the storm.
- Be aware of the potential for downed electric lines. If you see a downed wire, stay at least 25 feet away and report it by calling 9-1-1 and Consumers Energy at 800-477-5050.
- Never use a generator in an attached garage, basement, enclosed patio or near any air intakes. Doing so could cause a generator to produce hazardous levels of carbon monoxide, an odorless, colorless and deadly gas.
- Sign up for outage and restoration alerts via text, email or phone call at consumersenergy.com.
- Unplug sensitive electronics to prevent power surges.
- Check refrigerated food after power is restored.

September is also recognized as National Preparedness Month to promote family and community disaster and emergency planning now and throughout the year. This year’s theme is “Prepared, Not Scared.”

Week one began September 1st and runs through the 7th promoting saving early for disaster costs like checking insurance, planning financially and preparing an emergency financial first aid kit. Each week in September will have a new focus including making a plan to prepare for disasters, teaching youth to prepare for disasters and getting involved in your community’s preparedness.
