UPDATE: OKEMOS - Six mid-Michigan high schools attended the wrestling tournament recently held in the Okemos High School gym, hoping to out-perform all others on the wrestling mat. Yet the spirit of the event was about commemoration as well as competition. In late 2009, Okemos senior, Adam Nevells, was killed in a car collision just outside of the school. Adam excelled in athletics and was captain of the water polo and wrestling teams. His accident happened in September, and so Adam was never able to wrestle his senior year. To honor their lost teammate, the coaches and teammates designated the event as the Adam Nevells Memorial Wrestling Tournament.

In addition to naming the event after Adam, the tam also commemorates Adam by holding up his shoes in their huddle. A memorial table was set up at the event housing pictures of Adam and a raffle. The proceeds of the raffle go towards a memorial fund. The Nevells family donated money to the to establish the Adam A. Nevells Memorial Fund. They created the memorial fund to provide scholarships in the four areas in which Adam excelled: athletics, music, scouts, and church. They wanted the money given to the Okemos Athletic Boosters to be made into an award in order to recognize a senior wrestler who exemplifies the values Adam expressed in his life.


Mike Nevells, Adams father, said they were pleased about the wrestling event: "We think it' s an an excellent sport and we're very glad to have Adam's memory be remembered in this annual tournament."
