LANSING - Thursday, November 6th a crowd gathered inside Sir Pizza in Old Town Lansing awaiting a decision that would change the lives of couples all over Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the ban on same sex marriage in a 2-1 decision.
This differs from recent rulings from the 4th, 7th, 9th, and 10th circuits which struck down gay marriage bans.
Marriage equality activists in Michigan were disappointed by the decision but are not giving up the fight.
"The decision yesterday was beyond disappointing however I am confident that the Supreme Court will over turn the 6th Circuit Courts decision and I am confident that couples across Michigan will have marriage equality soon and I vow personally to fight for them," said Gina Calcagno, the Coalition Manager for the Statewide Marriage Campaign.
She sees the 6th Circuit Court's decision as an opportunity for the U.S. Supreme court to take up the same sex marriage case and make a ruling.
The Supreme Court was waiting on a split decision between the circuits and since the 6th Circuit's ban differs from the rulings of the other circuits the issue may now be ruled on on a national level.
