MASON - Cars lined up at the Ingham County Road Department Saturday morning for a free scrap tire collection event. Scrap tires are being collected from 8am until noon. Residents are allowed to drop off up to ten tire to be recycled, free of charge. Residential, tractor, and semi tires will all be accepted at the collection ,with or without rims.
Ingham County Health Officer Linda S. Vail said scrap tires are a health concern. Vail explained, "they are flammable, can leach chemicals into the ground and may serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes. By recycling unwanted tires, we can eliminate these concerns and turn waste into a usable product."
The Ingham County Health Department, Meridian Township, and Eaton County Resource Recovery Department partnered together to host the scrap tire collection. Part of the funding for the event came from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.
