Volunteers and Residents Braved the Weather to Recycle Unwanted Items

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - On Saturday, September 28th, Meridian Township held their Fall Regional Recycling Event at Chippewa Middle School.

Residents dropped off recyclable items such as electronics, egg cartons, medications and paint buckets.

Members of the Meridian Township Transportation Commission, Okemos ACTION Club, Goodwill Industries and E Paint Recycling were in attendance.

Tim Kizer, who works for E Paint Recycling, has been with Meridian Recycle Club for seven years and has helped with many Spring and Fall Recycling events, by recycling items such as latex and plastic materials as well as car oil cans.

"In the seven years we have been in business, we have kept over six million cans out of the landfill," said Kizer.

Throughout the day, Meridian Township's Environmental Programs Coordinator, LeRoy Harvey, worked with the 100 volunteers and helped guide traffic for dropping recyclables at the right drop-off areas.

Harvey said that while the recycling event in the Fall is a bit slower than in the Spring, he still saw a steady stream of traffic coming in to drop off recyclables throughout the day.

More than 800 vehicles stopped by to drop off unwanted items. According to Harvey, nearly 25,156 pounds of electronics, over 10,000 pounds of metal, 74 bicycles, 2,366 pounds of clothing and 2,300 cans of paint were a part of those items to be re-used or recycled.
