MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Due to an inconsistency with the state Open Carry Law, the Meridian Township Park Commission will be updating the rules on their park signs.
Director of Meridian Township Parks and Recreation, LuAnn Maisner said, "It really gives us an opportunity to look at our signs and our park rules. We have a lot of rules on those signs and I think it's time that we kind of pair that down . So we're evaluating what our signs look like right now and all the real important things that need to be on there."
The current park rules signs say that firearms or weapons of any kind are prohibited. The Park Commission will be removing this rule from the list.
"As we look to our ordinance, you know like I said, it was written many many years ago and some of those things may be obsolete and then on the flip side, there may be some things that are pertinent in today's society that really didn't exist back in the 70s and 80s and so it's really an opportunity for us to take a look at our entire park ordinance and see what all amendments need to be made and do it all at one time," Maisner added.
The new ordinance allows licensed gun carriers to posses a gun on park property, however, shooting a gun while on park grounds is prohibited.
This excuses those who are chosen to control nonnative species and overpopulation of species as well as those chosen to preserve public health, and promote quality of ecological resources.
