MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The 9/11 World Trade Center Memorial Quilt Project is coming to Meridian Township on Friday, September 8th, 2017.

This Project is made up of over 7,500 squares from quilters across the country after September 11, 2001. Amy Sue Leasure of Prescott Valley, Arizona came up with the idea as a way to memorialize those who passed away at the World Trade Center. Although Leasure passed away in 2002, the project was carried on by Brian Kohler and was completed in 2004.

It premiered in Seattle, Washington on September 11, 2004. The quilts were then passed to Beverly Kuemin, who is now the Keeper of the Quilt.

Kuemin has taken the Quilt to Michigan and Indiana, but she continues to work towards showing it around the county, as Leasure had dreamed to do. She finds the Quilt to be "an awesome thing to see and to know. I think Amy's vision was a star for every victim, and that's why a lot of the quilts have stars."

The project is made up of three hundred individual quilts, from the squares that were donated to Leasure. Throughout the quilts the names and ages of September 11th World Trade Center victims can be found written in large block letters. Also included are honor banners dedicated to the first responders.

To help Kuemin set up the Quilt, Firefighter Union Local 1600 sent out members to help. Battalion Chief Kennith Phinney stated that, "Any time that we can honor the citizens of America that passed on that day as well as the first responders it's always an honor to let them know that they were not forgotten. It's a day that we will never forget."

The Quilt will be on exhibit at the Meridian Mall in the south east wing starting Friday, September 8th at 10:00 am and will run through Monday, September 11th.
