Proceeds From Annual Pancake Breakfast to Help Send Kids to Camp

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The money raised at the annual pancake breakfast on March 9 has been presented to local scouts and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The breakfast was hosted by Meridian Township Professional Firefighters Local 1600 Union as well as local scout troops at 242 Community Church. A $5 donation was all that was needed for all you can eat pancakes and sausage.

Attendees were also able to check out a fire truck outside the building.

A check for $1,300 was accepted by Ted Ferris, Assistant Troop Master of Troop 125, on behalf of the Meridian Scouts Campership/Scholarship Fund.

The Campership/Scholarship Fund aims at providing scouts a chance for attending camps during the summer.

"We've enjoyed this partnership for three years now," Ferris said. "Actually, from last year we've doubled the amount of participants, so we went from about 120 to 240 people coming."

Ferris was referring to the partnership with the fire department as well as the Muscular Dystrophy Association which was given a check of $600, accepted by Executive Director of Greater Michigan Muscular Dystrophy Association, Cindy Clark.

The association has had a relationship with fire departments around the country since 1954 according to Clark.

"We do a great program in the summer where we send kids, ages 8 to 17, to our MDA summer camp," she said. "Last year we sent close to 200 kids to camp, and this money that the fire department raised at the pancake breakfast really helps send these kids to camp."

All three organizations were glad to see that the number of attendees had increased from last year and are hoping to see those numbers grow even more for the next annual breakfast.
