MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - October 15 is White Cane Day.

A day to celebrate and acknowledge the accomplishments of visually impaired members of our community.

Meridian Township board member, Dan Opsommer read a resolution at a recent board meeting to recognize this day.

"We acknowledge the history and the many years and decades in which we have tried to improve and do more to make sure that our communities are accessible to all," said Opsommer.

For Meridian Township resident, Donna Rose, she may be visually impaired but she believes vision is more than sight.

"Not only is the white cane a symbol for those who are blind, it also signifies independence for those who are trained to use it properly. It is rooted in our country’s can do spirit, where everyone can be included if they so desire," said Rose.

Meridian Township continues to better transportation services through CATA to benefit the visually impaired.

"I think the best service that we provide here in Meridian Township is the Redi-Ride service. So it’s a nine to five service, door to door public transportation option for everyone in the community but it certainly helps give independence to those with disabilities," said Opsommer.

Opsommer says the Township is also looking into audible intersections and cross walks.
