OKEMOS - Last night, Okemos High School was the scene of the much anticipated MHSAA Girls Lacrosse Regional Final. Okemos and Dewitt battled hard, but only one team would walk away the regional champions.
Three minutes into the game, Okemos Junior Jensen Adair found the back of the net with the help of her teammate Grace Richardson. After another Okemos goal, Dewitt's Rachel Madar responded with a goal of her own to make it a one score game. However, this back and forth affair wouldn't last long as Okemos caught fire. They continued to pour it on, scoring 5 straight goals, including 2 from Jensen Adair, and one each from Emily Renfrew, Lola Gonzalez, and Melaina Grewal, as Okemos took a 10-4 lead into halftime.
At the start of the second half Jensen Adair came out firing, scoring with the first shot she took. Alexa Beyer of DeWitt scored soon after, but the celebration was short-lived as Okemos pummeled Dewitt with another barrage of 5 straight goals. Unfortunately for Dewitt, the lead was simply too much, as the Okemos Chieftains earned the MHSAA Girls Lacrosse Regional Title, winning by a score of 18-6.
After the game, Okemos Coach Brandon Schwind said: "We had a game plan going into it. We started to analyze the film before we played and we had a plan. We knew how they were going to play and we wanted to change things up before going into this game. We had a tremendous opportunity to continue the Okemos tradition."
Okemos moves on to the MHSAA State Semifinal to play Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood on June 7th at Novi High School at 5:30 pm.
