MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The Turkey; is the star for many holiday meals. Some people choose to roast the bird in the oven for serval hours, while others cook there's outside in a turkey fryer. The Meridian Township Fire Department got into the holiday spirit and put on a turkey frying demonstration in hopes residents will stay safe while frying this year's turkeys.

Residents are advised to read the oil heating instructions based on which oil they choose to use, but the rule of thumb for peanut oil is around 375 degrees. "Once you get to the 400 mark and above that's when you're really starting to get into the danger zone as far as the oil being too hot and being uh pretty ready to ignite," warned Meridian Township Fire Inspector Tavis Millerov.

During the demonstration one of the fryer vats gave off a clear sign the oil had become too hot.
Fire Inspector Millerov said, "When I did a last check of the temperature on that we were about 425-430. So we're definitely a little bit into the redzone as far as the temperature goes and that was evident when you saw me take that lid off. You see the little wisp of smoke coming out of there then that's definitely a red flag that ooh wait a minute I've got my oil too hot here."

Just like cooking anything else, a turkey fryer should never be left unattended. The National Fire Protection Association's website suggest a good way to remember this is to "Keep your eyes on what you fry."

Incorrect temperature and dropping your turkey in hot oil too fast is a recipe for a grease fire. Whether you fry your turkey ever year or this is your first time, Millerov reminds resident to make sure they bring there indoor fire extinguisher with them.

"A regular indoor fire extinguisher, dry chemical fire extinguisher will work with no problem on a fire outside with your turkey fryer."

Although you may be eager to get that turkey on the table, Millerov says, "Take your time, thats the biggest thing with it, take your time. If you take your time it will be delicious, trust me."

If a problem does arise, the Meridian Township Fire Department wants residents to remember to call them immediately, even if you think the situation is under control.
