MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Meridian Township firefighters are stressing the importance of protecting you and your family in the case of an emergency.
October is fire prevention month and it's crucial for you to have a fire extinguisher in your home.
When it comes to fire extinguishers, there are many different sizes and according to Tavis Millerov, Meridian Township Fire Inspector, every home should have a small one in their kitchen.
Firefighters use fire prevention month to spread the word about fire safety.
"This is a great way for us to get into the homes and be able to talk to people about having a fire extinguisher and knowing how to use a fire extinguisher properly," said Millerov.
But why is October be the designated fire prevention month?
"October is fire safety month and it is always the second week of october being fire safety week because that is the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire," said Millerov.
Every year there is a theme that goes along with the month. this year's theme? "Don't wait, check the date!"
Smoke detectors expire after ten years so be sure to check yours. If your detector does not have a date on it, replace it because according to Millerov, it is older than ten years.
One major aspect of fire safety that Millerov stressed is having a plan.
"Make sure you have two ways to get out of your house, two ways to get out of your bedroom. Having alternate routes of escape and having a common meeting place in the front of your home, if there is an emergency where everyone can come together no matter where they may be when it happens," said Millerov.
