HASLETT - Haslett Vikings quarterback Hyrum Tibbitts performed one miracle on Friday night, but two would be necessary to beat Mason. The Bulldogs held on to a, 12-10, victory, despite a successful fourth down "Hail Mary" conversion that put the Vikings in striking distance of a possible comeback win.
Down, 12-10, with a couple minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Vikings needed to make a stop. On third down, Haslett linebacker Connor Pelfrey broke straight through the Mason offensive line, stuffing the run and forcing a punt.
Haslett in need of a score on the ensuing possession, shortly found themselves in a fourth and long. Tibbitts took the snap from shotgun, rolled to his left, loaded up and heaved a bomb to fellow sophomore Jaden Thelen who came away with the reception in stride for the first down.
The Mason defense would respond, however, quickly forcing another fourth down at the Bulldogs 35-yard line.
With 48 seconds left, Tibbitts, searched for magic once more, could find no one open, and eventually scrambled to his doom. A Mason sack turned the ball over on downs, and allowed the Bulldogs to knee out the remaining clock.
Haslett fell to 2-3, while the Bulldogs improved to 4-1 and look to make big noise in the CAAC this season.
