MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The Red Cedar Flats re-development project has been a conversation for quite some time. When the development is complete, 4 new buildings will be built.
"It was part of a mixed use project so there's one building that has retail on the first floor and apartments on the 2nd and 3rd floor. The other 3 buildings will be 3 story apartment buildings," mentioned Martha Wyatt, Associate Planner/Landscape Architect for Meridian Township.
There will be a total of 112 apartments with approximately 125,000 square feet overall of all 4 buildings. Currently, almost everything on the site has been torn down except the building near Hobby Lobby in the north part of the site.
"Right now a building permit is in review for the first building which would be the mixed use building near the front of Grand River. I believe they'll complete the other 3 buildings over the next year or maybe less," Wyatt stated.
So what's next for Red Cedar Flats?
"We're getting the building permit reviewed and approved for building 1 for the mixed use building near Grand River. As part of the mixed use they have amenities that are required, so in this case they have some open space areas...so there's a plaza by Grand River with landscaping and seat walls and then they have covered bike racks and recycling centers within the complex," said Wyatt.
It's been approximately 3-4 months since this project began and as far as when the development will be completed...there is not an exact time as of now but Wyatt is excited to see these apartments eventually up and running.
"It's just a good fit for the area and a good re-development...there's lots of cross connections with the different retail centers already existing there. I think it will be a good use of the property and close to the river so there's some talk about a connecting pathway eventually to get to Michigan State and this is fairly close," mentioned Wyatt.
