MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The Michigan State Police Department are gearing up for the annual Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) traffic safety initiative Nov. 25-29, 2015. With weather conditions being so unpredictable with ice, snow, or sleet, the MSP want to try their best to instill safety in holiday drivers.

“Our goal is to prevent traffic crashes and fatalities so every family can have a safe holiday – or as we like to say, so everyone can live to eat the leftovers,” said Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue, Director of the MSP.

The second deadliest holiday in Michigan for traffic crashes is Thanksgiving. In 2014, there were six traffic fatalities during the Thanksgiving holiday.

According to Michigan.gov and MIReady, items you should include in a preparedness kit are:

Water - one gallon per person, per day, for at least three days
Food - at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food per person
Battery-powered or hand crank radio and extra batteries
Flashlight and extra batteries
First aid kit
Whistle - to call for help
Dust Mask - to help filter contaminated air
Sanitation items - such as moist towelettes, garbage bags, and plastic ties.
Manual can opener - for food
Clothing, shoes, and bedding
Important family documents - such as copies of insurance policies, bank account records, and medical records
Unique family needs - such as daily prescription medications, infant formula, or diapers
